Generation Investment Management (Generation IM) is a sustainable investment management firm founded in 2004; its co-founders included former US Vice President Al Gore and former Goldman Sachs' Asset Management head David Blood. The firm promotes long-term sustainable investing and sustainable capitalism.

History

[edit]

Generation was founded in April 2004 by a group of seven founding partners led by Al Gore and David Blood,[1] with a vision to see long-term sustainable investing become best practice and for sustainable capitalism to become the enduring economic model.[2] The firm began investing client money in April 2005.[3]

Generation has offices in London and San Francisco,[4] and as of 2024, employed over 100 people.[5] Generation Investment Management LLP is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK. The firm's advisory board, chaired by Gore, meets twice a year.

Generation operates four strategies, investing both public and private equity: Global Equity, Asia Equity, Growth Equity and Private Equity;[6] alongside a climate-led investing business, Just Climate.[7]

In November 2007, Generation and Kleiner Perkins announced a global collaboration to "find, fund and accelerate green business, technology and policy solutions with the greatest potential to help solve the current climate crisis."[8]

Generation has built a global research platform to integrate sustainability research into fundamental equity analysis.[9]

In 2014, Generation launched Climate Solutions Fund II and the foundation partnered with George Serafeim. In 2015, Generation launched the Sustainability Insights Series, releasing "Environmental Intelligence" and "The Power Industry in Transition."[10]
