The Volvo V40 is a small family car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 2012 to 2019.[1] It was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and was sold in Europe between 2012 and 2019.[4][5]
The V40 was designed by American Chris Benjamin, with the interior being designed by Swedish Pontus Fontaeus. It was the last Volvo to be designed under Steve Mattin, before he departed the company, and the last to be designed under Ford. It is similar to the 3rd Generation Ford Focus, and uses the same Global C platform with modifications to the electric power steering, and revised spring and damper settings.[5]
Equipment
[edit]Standard
[edit]The V40 featured adaptive electronic power steering, dual zone climate control with auto fan speed and vent direction as standard. The climate controls are operated with dials and buttons at the bottom of the centre console and the status of them is displayed at the bottom of the infotainment screen. A 5" colour infotainment system with an 850W sound system and multifunction steering wheel which also controls a speed limiter are standard equipment for the V40. The radio supports Bluetooth, USB, FM and AM as standard, as well as having its own allocated hard drive space for storing music. The infotainment system can interface to a smartphone to make calls using a microphone and the car's speaker system. The standard gauge cluster features a trip computer, economy gauge, fuel level gauge which indicates itself with 8 bars, tachometer, shift up/down suggestion indicator (replaced with a gear selection indicator in Automatic models) and digital speed readout, which is replaced with a clock while the car is switched off and if the driver decides. Certain D2-engined models have the ability to electronically read their oil levels.
Volvo's 9-31mph city safety LiDAR-based car-car collision avoidance system is included as standard on V40's, as well as automatic wipers and daytime running/ dip beam headlight control. The V40 is noted for being the first car to include a pedestrian airbag, and this too is standard equipment, located at the base of the windshield.
Optional
[edit]The V40 had many options, including:
- A fully digital gauge cluster with 3 different "themes".
- Basic cruise control, included on many trims
- DAB radio, which has often been installed for free by dealerships.
- A 7" infotainment system with support for DVD playback.
- Multiple different sound system upgrades, including one from Harman Kardon.
- One of 2 navigation systems depending on the car's age, which comes with the 7" infotainment screen and a voice control system.
- The later navigation system, Sensus Connect, featured internet connectivity via WiFi or bluetooth, a newer UI and the ability for the car to read notifications from a connected smartphone.
- Between 2013 and 2014, Volvo Sensus Connected Touch, Volvo's early, Android-based touchscreen infotainment system, accessed from the media section of the main operating system.
- An exterior styling package dependent on the trim.
- An extra camera in the front windscreen, which gave the capabilities of:
- Road sign recognition for at least no overtaking and speed limit signs.
- Lane Keeping Aid (LKA), Volvo's lane departure assistant which would steer the car back into lane in the event of the driver wandering out.
- Automatic high beam control.
- As with other models, a further radar unit could be fitted in the grille in conjunction with the upgraded front windshield camera and a red/orange light bar beneath the windshield to add:
- Adaptive cruise control.
- Early collision warning and auto-braking that remains functioning at higher speeds than city safety and can detect cars in a much higher range than the standard city safety system, as well as pedestrians, and starting in 2013 at least, cyclists.
- Rear and front parking sensors (separately)
- When fitted with both, the V40 would have access to Park Assist Pilot, Volvo's Automatic Parking system which functions for parallel parking.
- Blind spot monitor RADARs (BLIS) which also sometimes included Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), a system that warned of cross traffic approaching from the left and right while reversing. CTA on the V40 is advertised to detect cars mainly, and cyclists and pedestrians under certain circumstances.
- An illuminated crystal gear knob.
- A "winter pack" bundling a set of heated front seats and a heated windshield.
- Rear heated seats, available separately, which are now a rare option.
- A "winter illumination pack" bundling rear dome light controls, the illuminated gear knob, a rear colour changing ambience light and front bi-xenon headlamps with LED position and daytime running lamps.
- A "LUX" package available for SE, R-Design and Cross Country trim models featuring the winter illumination pack and free access to one of the cheaper leather interiors available with those trims.
- A panoramic glass roof with an electronic shade.
- A backup camera with vehicle position guides.
- On later models, a 4G in-car Wi-Fi system.
- Volvo On Call app control system.
- Polestar engine tuning
- A variety of different trims for the centre console button panel.
Engine History
[edit]The engine lineup at launch was:
- Two petrol engines; a 1.6 or 2.0 litre EcoBoost I4 producing either 150 or 180 hp, dependent on specification, and a 2.5 litre Volvo B525 I5 producing 254 hp
- And two diesel engines; a 1.6 litre PSA Peugeot Citroën / Ford Duratorq engine, which produces 115 hp, whilst emitting 94 g/km of CO2,[6] and a 2.0 litre I5 Volvo diesel engine available in two versions, with 150 hp and 177 hp.[7] In some countries, the V40 T5 can have a smaller 2.0 litre I5 (B5204T9) producing 213 hp @ 6000 rpm and 300 nm from 2,700 to 5,000 rpm.
From the model year of 2014, Volvo V40's began to be fitted with Volvo's in-house developed Drive E (VEA) diesel and petrol engines to the V40. As of January 2015, these engines were available in the new V40 D4 (replacing the previous five cylinder D4) and V40 T5 (replacing the petrol five cylinder T5).
Available in both the V40 and V40 Cross Country bodies, the D4 Drive E includes a four-cylinder twin turbo diesel engine rated 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft), a six speed manual transmission reconfigured for improved fuel economy, pressure feedback from each fuel injector, reduced friction, and a smart valve solution on the cooling system for a more rapid heat up phase after a cold start.
The T5 Drive-E includes a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine rated 243 PS (179 kW; 240 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft), with eight speed automatic transmission.[8][9]
These new engines replace the older, but identically branded, five cylinder engines. After introduction of the VEA D4 and T5, the 1.6 D2 and 2.0 five cylinder D3 are replaced with VEA 2.0 D2 and D3 engines. The 1.6 EcoBoost and 2.0 five cylinder are replaced with VEA 2.0 T2, T3, and T4 engines. For some petrol automatic models, a de stroked version of the VEA 2.0, with 1.5 litre displacement, is used for T2 and T3.

Trims
[edit]The pre-facelift V40 featured 4 trims, ES, SE, R-Design and Cross Country, the last of which is often labelled as a different model entirely, including by Volvo themselves. Even before the facelift, the first 2 trims are named differently in different regions, with names such as Kinetic and Momentum being used instead of ES, and Inscription at least on facelift models to describe the SE.
The ES trim V40 is the budget trim, featuring a full cloth interior, black trimming on the steering wheel, charcoal centre console trim and most distinctly from outside, short, stubby turning indicators on the mirrors. The V40 ES has compatibility with a limited number of options.
The other 3 trims are in a flat heirarchy with each other. The SE is posed as a neutral, if not comfort focused upper tier trim option, while the R-Design trim is placed as a sports trim and the Cross Country a light offroad trim. Of these 3, the Cross Country trim at MSRP was most expensive, followed by the R-Design, and then the SE.
All of these trims feature chrome trimmings on the steering wheel, with cruise control on Cross Country and SE models seemingly standard.
R-Design
[edit]The R-Design trim features a different front and rear bumper, lowered suspension, adaptive chassis control system, and twin chrome exhaust tips as standard on D2 models, which otherwise would have a single, hidden downward facing exhaust pipe. The R-Design also includes the digital gauge cluster system, embroidered sports seats, a perforated steering wheel and special R-Design centre console trim, as well as a black headliner. The daytime running lights at the front of R-Design trim V40's are also replaced with a vertical LED system.
Cross Country
[edit]The Cross Country trim is more similar to the SE, but features a raised suspension, matte black plastic skirts, and a front bumper more akin to the R-Design's but with matte plastic details. The Cross Country trim also includes a different rear bumper and glove box panel embossed with "CROSS COUNTRY" lettering, and a copper dawn centre console trim. The daytime running lights on Cross Country trim models without bi-xenon headlights are notably a mix of the SE and R-Design's unit, being one in the shape of the R-Design's assembly, but with a single halogen bulb instead of the 4 LED's in all R-Design daytime running lights.
Also of note, the Cross Country is the only trim of V40 available with AWD, with it specifically offered (or likely included) on 2.0 and 2.5L 5 and later, 4 cylinder T5 engined units of the Cross Country V40.
2016 facelift
[edit]A facelifted V40 made an appearance at a time near the release of the 2015 XC90. This new revision of the V40 includes the LED Thor's hammer headlights on all variants, in line with Volvo's then-new lineup. The daytime running lights and legacy halogen or bixenon bulbs were removed as the Thor's Hammer headlamps made them redundant. The facelift also added new interior options and further continued to replace the last engines the V40 could have from the period of Ford's ownership, but left the car otherwise largely the same.

Two trims of the facelifted V40 have different names: ES being renamed to Momentum in most regions and SE being renamed to Inscription. All facelifted Momentum V40's have the same side mirror turning signals as other trim models.
Volvo V40 Cross Country (2013–2019)
[edit]The Cross Country is a version of the Volvo V40 with protective body panels, higher profile tyres and an increased ride height. Its T5 petrol variants feature Haldex Gen-5 All Wheel Drive as an option, sometimes as standard, along with hill descent control. Some V40 Cross Country's are equipped with more powerful engines than the regular V40.[10][11][12][13]
