From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Xinmin Evening News (Chinese: 新民晚报; pinyin: Xīnmín Wǎnbào), formerly known as Xinmin Po, is a state-owned newspaper published since September, 1929 in Shanghai, China. It is owned by Shanghai United Media Group.

As of September 2024, the Media and Journalism Research Center evaluated the parent company of the Xinmin Evening News, the Shanghai United Media Group, to be "State Controlled Media" under its State Media Matrix.[1][2]

History

[edit]

In 1990, Xinmin Evening News personnel were dispatched to the U.S. to found an American edition to counter negative perceptions of the Chinese government following the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre.[3]

In October 2020, the United States Department of State designated Xinmin Evening News as a foreign mission of the Chinese government.[4][5][6]
