The band is no longer playing so they should put the end date and last line up of the band when it says to present

dumb idea I had..

[edit]

So I've noticed that Pink Floyd's 'Lyrical themes' is probably the longest Lyrical themes section I've ever seen on a Wikipedia article, much too large to merge into the Artistry (In most articles I've seen since I started here, 'Lyrical themes' is usually either a subsection of 'Artistry' or merged with 'Musical style'). It has me wondering, that since Pink Floyd live performances is its own article, and List of awards and nominations received by Pink Floyd is its own article, maybe Lyrical themes of Pink Floyd or Artistry of Pink Floyd could be their own articles as well? Just my boring Saturday evening musings. Stay groovy! Lofi Gurl (talk) 02:29, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lead sentence "were" vs. "are"

[edit]

I see there is a note in the lead section that reads: "present tense decided by a full RFC in May 2022 – Talk:Pink Floyd/Archive 12#Past or present tense? - please leave as is unless there is a substantive change or a new RFC". I am leaving this message here to see if it would be appropriate to change "are" to "were". The band are clearly not active and don't plan on releasing new music because the 2022 reunion was a one-off. It even states this in the 2022-present section of the article: "Asked whether he was considering more Pink Floyd music, Gilmour said the single was a "one-off". This is supported by a source. Articles about inactive bands should be written in past tense. Bowling is life (talk) 00:47, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Five months ago, if I recall correctly, User:Bowling_is_life changed the article from "are" to "were" and listed all members as past members. At the time, we set of editors confirmed that there had been no substantive change to the band nor a new RFC. So, the article was reverted back.
I appreciate the diligence, but not much time has passed since then.
In that time, has there been a substantive change or a new RFC? Davidwbaker (talk) 06:09, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidwbaker: The consensus was met almost three years ago, and the band hasn't released anything since. David Gilmour himself said that "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" was a one-off for charity. I left this message to suggest changing the article into past tense. The article's body says it was a one-off and that they are not active. The band members section and infobox should reflect that. Bowling is life (talk) 01:50, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suggest that a band that can choose to record and release a one-off single is a band that exists. Nothing has changed since the band did so, and it can do so again. The band may not be active in the sense of currently gigging or recording, but it exists - David Gilmour and Nick Mason are its current members, whereas Roger Waters is a former member - their status is different. "It's Pink Floyd if it's me and Nick" - David Gilmour.
The band didn't release anything or play any gigs from 1983 to 1987 either, for example, and has only been intermittently active since 1994, but I don't think that means the band doesn't exist - it has a defined current membership, and can choose to record and release new material.
After 2014 we did list the band in the past tense based on Gilmour's statements ("It's a shame, but this is the end" and "Pink Floyd are 'done'"), but that changed with the 2022 release which demonstrated that the band has the potential and willingness to make new releases; I don't think I've seen anything suggesting the situation is different now, and I don't think it makes sense to say that the band moves into present tense whenever it releases something then immediately stops existing again. We still have a section headed "1985–present" and, within that, one headed "2022–present". This contains the statement: "In October 2024, Pink Floyd agreed to sell their catalogue to Sony Music for approximately $400 million." So the band is still a legal entity. If they were all dead, or if the surviving members were no longer legally using the name, things would be different. But they are not. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:34, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I find this last point convincing. Pink Floyd appear to still be a going concern legally, making decisions about their back catalogue and so on, so... Popcornfud (talk) 13:39, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
